Each month staff memembers will write up a video recommendation review on fan based music videos which they feel are exceptional within the x files vidding community. Reviews
are based upon many factors such as arrangement, concept, creativity, quality, etc. and not based upon bias opinions such as certain genres, characters, or video creators. It's based only
on the video itself. Upon each review, visitors are given the option to give their own personal opinions on the video that has been reviewed by clicking on the comment at the bottom of each review. The first thing I noticed when watching this video was that the viewer has a sense of what the characters are going through and can ‘feel’ the music. The vidder has taken advantage of the fast-paced song by using quick changes between clips in conjunction with showing multiple images simultaneously and although this means that the viewer may find it difficult to have time to fully appreciate each clip, it works in this video as it gives the viewer a sense of the ‘out of control’ feeling that is portrayed in the song. The vidder has chosen clips that are filmed with movement of the camera as well as using overlayed clips of the same scene with slight delays so that there is never a feeling of calm throughout the video.
The choice of transitions and effects are timed well with the beat and are matched with the sounds/instruments that are used at that particular part in the song. The decision to shorten the song from over 7 minutes to 4 ˝ minutes benefited the video as it allowed the vidder to use the best clips that remained relevant to the theme without becoming repetitive. After all, its better leaving your audience wanting more rather than struggling to find clips just so a full version of a song can be used. Even though there are a lot of action scenes used throughout the music video where there are no lyrics, the vidder stays true to the theme of the song so the idea behind the video remains clear.
Overall, an excellent action video that really gets the adrenalin pumping and highlights the perilous situations that Mulder and Scully had to face while investigating the X-files.
Just thought I would mention this as I do enjoy the fact that certain clip choices in music videos aren’t always obvious unless the viewer has a good knowledge of the show. For those philes who can see a snippet of a clip and remember exactly what the characters are talking about in the scene, the relevance of choosing the scene from ‘Home’ to use over the part of the song ‘and raise the population of this town’ is immediately apparent. (Sometimes it just feels good that you are ‘in’ on the joke).

This video is something different for Gillyakinomlena, she self prescribes, and with the author still in two minds about what it actually is, leaves the viewer slightly perplexed.
Technically the video is strong with effects to intensify the action, wipes and filters are frequent and this does raise the bar in XF vidding circles. Thought and effort has obviously gone into this angst driven emotional ride. I'm hesitant at calling it a journey however, as there is no real identifiable beginning, progression, climax or end although there is an effort to prove there is structure. There is an opening and ending quotation, however in this viewers mind they don't appear to make sense to the overall feeling of the video and there are several moments of repetition, not necessarily the exact same shot but the same scene just moments later. The fact that the viewer begins to notice these repeats makes the video seem too long.
Creatively, Gillyakinomlena effectively produces an angst ridden piece. We almost get the concept of Scully's affection for Mulder waning, with clips from Never Again and Milagro to emphasise this. There is the sign of Mulder caring for Scully, but as in the title of the video, it is 'not enough'. Nevertheless I didn't seem to care enough about the emotion, perhaps because of the structure, I just couldn't get into the drama unfolding, and no special effects were going to change that. The song was angst ridden and the lyrics worked, however I think the song might have been a little repetitive, perhaps then being the cause of the exhaustiveness in the video.
Ultimately, this video is a good one, but not a great one. A great video is one that takes a brilliant song, finds a journey and explores the path to its end. It will take characters/actors on an emotional curve and obviously be pleasing on the eye. I look back and realise this is a very negative review and for that I am sorry, the video is worth a viewing, just to acknowledge the effort that went in, as most of us know, it takes a lot to make a video.
